AWARD WINNING FLOAT “MAKING CONNECTIONS” IN THE 2013 PASADENA TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE FEATURED THE ENCOUNTER RESTAURANT IN THE LANDMARK THEME BUILDING IN LAX On January 1, 2013, more than 7,000 fragrant roses and nearly 5,000 carnations adorned a float created by the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (LA Tourism) and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). The float won the Mayor’s Award and replicated the $ 1.5-billion New Tom Bradley International Terminal opening in 2013, the Sister City Street Sign, Encounter Restaurant in the landmark Theme Building, four of the LAX Pylons, Palm Trees and the LAX sign. A bright yellow and orange trimmed Boeing 767 jet soared almost 17 ft. high between the New Bradley Terminal and the landmark Theme Building. Entitled, “Making Connections,” the floral extravaganza was based on the tournament’s Dr. Seuss theme, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and was viewed by more than 130 million people in 220 countries and territories. Designed by Pasadena-based Phoenix Decorating Company, the float was the 115th consecutive annual entry for the City of Los Angeles, making the City the longest running parade float participant. No taxpayer funds were used for the float. Information from December 26, 2012 News Release…L.A. Tourism/Susan Lomax and LAWA/Nancy Suey Castles
